Hazelnut
Totem for Tuesday, October 11: Hazelnut. Hazelnut is also known at the Filbert. Burnt remains shells have been found at archaeological digs and carbon dated to 7,000 BCE (Before the Common Era). Hazelnut has been fed to livestock, used with chocolate, and added to coffee.

Broccoli
Totem for Saturday, October 8: Broccoli. Broccoli is hated by a former president and loved by children making dioramas. Broccoli has been a staple of the Italian diet for over 2,000 years. It is high in Vitamin C. It is considered to be a help in preventing heart disease. It reduces the risk of aggressive prostrate cancer. It is also good in preventing other kinds of cancer and helps to build a good immune system. (Boiling Broccoli reduces its potential help.) It also gives the consumer sticky gas.
Like Broccoli, it is better to use a light hand when working with new ideas. They are easier to accomplish when you use them raw, stir-fried, or treated to a quick blast from the microwave. Even a light steaming is preferable. When you allow them to simmer or boil you are draining your ideas of all the good stuff that make them palatable to you.
To avoid a smelly byproduct, handle a new idea with respect and a light hand. Boiling it will only lead to an overcooked mess that will force you to open windows to air the place out.

Totem for Friday, October 7: Meadow Saffron. Meadow Saffron is also known as Naked Ladies and Autumn Crocus. It primarily grows wild in fields and is toxic to cattle.
Everyone ages. If they don't it is because they are dead. It is not natural to see people of a certain age without crinkle lines at their eyes and furrows on their brows. These things are a sign that you are alive, that you are living.
If you are feeling the clock ticking (and this happens to everyone, not just the ancient, even twenty-somethings can feel they are missing out on life), feel like you haven't accomplished anything, stop and take a look at what you have accomplished. Begin with the fact that you have survived up until now. Move on from there to other things you have done. Unless you have been locked in a prison cell all your life, there are plenty of things you have done. You may not have written "The Great American Novel" or painted like Picasso. You may not have driven in the Indy 500. Not many have. What have you been doing? Did you hold a toddler's hand as she took her first steps? Did you help an elderly neighbor? Did you rescue a dog or cat from a shelter? Have you sent your time on a couch playing video games or have you been living life?

It may be too late to go to space in a NASA rocket, but other than that the field is wide open. Giant Sequoia
Totem for Tuesday, October 4: Giant Sequoia. The Giant Sequoia only grows naturally on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada in groves. They are the world's largest trees. The bark at the base can be as much as three feet thick, which helps to protect it from fire. They have grown to be over 311 feet tall and 56 feet wide. The oldest tree is over 3,500 years old. Their cones average 230 seeds per cone. A mature tree averages over 11,000 cones per year with a total seed count of 300,000-400,000 seeds per tree, per year.
Sequoia stands proud and strong. It survives fire, flood, and drought by calling on its reserves. You have have that kind of strength in you. You have survived rejection and dejection. The trick is not to wallow in the emotions these things bring on. You can have a brief time to mourn the loss of a friend, lover, or goal, but there are plenty of others out there waiting for you to find them. The loss of one goal, friend, or lover should not stunt your growth as a person, instead it should be seen as an opportunity to learn more about yourself and what, or who, it is you really want.

The Butterfly Bush is so named because it attracts butterflies. Hummingbirds like it, too, they like to eat the bugs that gather around the bush. To propagate you cut off a branch, stick it in water, and keep it in water until new roots have formed. West of the Cascades the Butterfly Bush has been declared an Noxious Weed, due to its invasive tendencies. If you have one you want to get rid of you must dig up all its roots. Merely cutting it down will not work, it will just sprout again from the roots left behind.
Be careful about the flighty people you attract. They may be pretty to look at, but crazy to get rid of. You don't have to be kind to make them stick around, in fact, if you treat them like dog offal they will love you even more. But is this the kind of love you want?

Simon Cowell is not running through your neighborhood like a town crier of old shouting, "Give me your best singer." You have to get your tushy somewhere and audition. If you want money you have to work for it. Very few people actually win a big lottery, win a sweepstakes, or have some unknown relative leave them a fortune.

Yarrow improves the health of plants it is near by increasing their oil content and making them more bug resistant. It has also been used as an antiseptic, for colds, cramps, fevers, menstrual cramps, toothache, kidney disorders, and many other ailments.
Yarrow says it is time to mend a broken heart. Whether it was broken on a personal basis or something to do with business, it is time to move on. Anything can be fixed if you are willing to take the right steps.

I don't remember where I saw this, I think it might have been in the movie "Thor", but one of the characters said her father taught her not to set her goals too high, because if would only frustrate her when she couldn't attain them. I say that is a lot of bull droppings. Do not sell yourself short. Set your goals as high as you want, develop a plan, take the steps to achieve that goal (one step at a time, unless an opportunity arises that allows you to skip a step or two), and ultimately you will get the goal.

Lady's Mantle. The botanical name is Alchemist Mollis, "the little alchemist". It is also known as "dewdrop" and "dewcup" because the morning dew gathers in the leaves. If you touch a dewdrop to your forehead you will receive a blessing.
The flowers and leaves can be used in spells, primarily for women's magick, the earth goddess, healing, or to enhance your own spells. Add the dew to your spells and potions for an added boost.
