Tuesday, January 24. Watermelon. Watermelon is not really a member of the melon family, it is a bloated berry.
You may be feeling like a bloated berry yourself, but before you begin fasting, take an honest look at yourself. Do not compare yourself to the stick thin models and actors and actresses we see in the media. Look at yourself as a real human being with real needs, which include the need to eat real food.
Do you truly need to diet? Do you need to exercise? Do you need a combination of both?
Remember, the images we see in magazines are airbrushed and photo shopped. They are not real. Hollywood is the land where real people are turned into pale images of themselves with plastic surgery, liposuction, implants. A lot of money goes into those painfully thin bodies.
Eat sensibly, exercise, don't smoke, and you'll feel better.

Totem for Wednesday, January 4, 2012: Gillyflower. Gillyflower (the flower, not the actress from Fawlty Towers) is a member of the carnation family. In medieval times the Gillyflower was also used as currency. I also have a wine recipe for anyone over 21 who is interested.
Gillyflower cautions that instant love may not be a forever love. Lasting bonds of affection are built like a good house. You must have patience, a good foundation of friendship and trust. Common goals.
Do not trust people immediately. People wear different faces when they meet someone and are trying to impress them. So often people fall into a relationship, or fall into bed and think they are in love, too soon. Before they know the real person they are dealing with. When they become victims of the other persons schemes or brutality they are surprised. They didn't see it coming.

Even romance writers create heroines who are "the most beautiful" or "breathtaking" woman the hero and almost everyone else in the book has ever seen. Even if the heroine starts out as a plain Jane cleaning woman, once the hero gets a hold of her and gets her personal shoppers and groomers she becomes the "most beautiful".
What are we teaching our children? Girls pluck their eyebrows into oblivion, use harsh chemicals close to their eyes to make their lashes longer, thicker, darker. Cute little bunnies, kitties, and puppies have given their vision, if not their lives to have those chemicals tested on them first. Hormones from pregnant mares (female Horses) urine is used in creams, lotions, perfumes, even lipsticks. (Really, do you like the idea of putting horse piss on your lips at $10 a tube? Is this good for all those little tots that are made up and paraded around in beauty pageants?)
Some of the highest paid women in the world are supermodels.

Totem for Saturday, December 24, 2011: Palm Tree. Palm Trees grow in the desert and in rain forests. They like warm to temperate climates. Coconuts, dates, acai, betel nuts, and heart of palm are all harvested from various species of Palm Trees, bananas are not.
Not all fruits grown on Palm Trees are beneficial or good to eat. Some palms produce poisonous fruit. You may meet people through friends, the work place, school, or your neighborhood. Like the Palm Tree some of these people are good and kind, while others will poison your life. Be careful who you allow to get close to you and your family.

There is no reason to shut down your life during the colder months. You are not a bear; you do not need to hibernate. You can help combat Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) by going out for a walk during your lunch hour, being active outside on your days off, enjoying the sun while it is out. Even if it is could outside, get your body out there. That is what hats, scarves, and mittens are for.

There are people who survive in austere conditions while other languish behind behind tall walls. There are those that live life to the fullest and those that wait for life to find them. What is it you want out of life? Is it going to find you, or do you have to venture out to find it?
During this holiday season give of yourself. Take a name off a gift tree and help a person in need. Help out at a soup kitchen or a food pantry. Organize a party for underprivileged children.
No matter what your religious affiliation, or even if you don't have one, this is the season of celebration and giving.
If you really want to give a gift from the heart, donate blood. The blood banks are always low over the holidays and it just may go to someone you know.

A black cat is a beautiful animal, unless it chooses to cross a dark street in front of your car there may be a problem because you don't stop in time (poor kitty) or you swerve into something else. Allergies could play a big part, too, but that would be all cats, not just cats of the black variety.
A full moon brings more of everything. If you have a problem with your neighbor's foul moods during the rest of the month, do your best to avoid him during the full moon. Even your emotions are high during a full moon and it could lead to a dispute that will only end when one of you moves away.

Tis the season to beware of creeps. I would like to say that when people take Christ out of Christmas it brings out all the bad people. Unfortunately, the muggers, robbers, and rapists know the best time to find victims is when they are out of their homes and more unaware of the evil that surrounds them.
Every year we hear of homes that were burglarized and all the Christmas presents were stolen. When shopping, don't bring your purchases out to the car and then return to the mall to do more shopping, there may be a creeper watching you and as soon as you re-enter the stores the creeper will break your window or pop your trunk lock and waltz away with everything you have already purchased. Keep your money and credit cards in a safe place.
Always park in a well lighted parking lot. Be aware of those around you. Shop with a friend. Lock your car doors as soon as you enter the vehicle. Keep your windows closed. If you have a flat tire return to the store to call for assistance and have security accompany you back to your vehicle. Do not use the electronic car door opener until you are close to your vehicle. When walking in the parking lot carry your keys in your free hand. They will get you into your vehicle faster if you do not have to search for them, and they make handy, dandy weapons when needed.

You may disagree with what others do, but think carefully about how you respond. Is it really worth going to war with someone over? Is it worth ruining a relationship?
If it is a question of safety for yourself or others, then yes, it is worth going to war. But War should be the final response after you have tried all other means of negotiation.
War brings tragedy and loss to all involved, and it is usually the innocent who suffer the most. If you usually have a "take no prisoners" attitude, then War is inevitable because no one can negotiate with you.

You can be even more useful by recycling and not buying products from countries and companies that are polluting for profit. Make it unprofitable for companies to move jobs out of your country and into others.

There is beauty all around you, but you have neglected it in favor of other pleasures. Take time to look to your home. Take care of tasks that need to be done to maintain it in good order. If the exterior needs painting, start planning. Money is not a major factor, you can always get returned cans of paint from the major chain stores.

Giant Sequoia
Totem for Tuesday, October 4: Giant Sequoia. The Giant Sequoia only grows naturally on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada in groves. They are the world's largest trees. The bark at the base can be as much as three feet thick, which helps to protect it from fire. They have grown to be over 311 feet tall and 56 feet wide. The oldest tree is over 3,500 years old. Their cones average 230 seeds per cone. A mature tree averages over 11,000 cones per year with a total seed count of 300,000-400,000 seeds per tree, per year.
Sequoia stands proud and strong. It survives fire, flood, and drought by calling on its reserves. You have have that kind of strength in you. You have survived rejection and dejection. The trick is not to wallow in the emotions these things bring on. You can have a brief time to mourn the loss of a friend, lover, or goal, but there are plenty of others out there waiting for you to find them. Eat healthy. Get rid of foods that are heavily processed, have MSG (in any of its hundreds of names), high fructose corn syrup (be careful, the industry has petitioned the government to change the name to corn sugar on labels), and dyes. Natural and organic is the way to go.
Health is an issue you want to take care of. Do not leave a cough untreated. Take your vitamins.
Have a professional treat a prolonged ache or pain, before something that may be simple becomes something crippling.
If you have a headache, do NOT operate heavy equipment. This includes driving a car. This also means if you are on medications that lead to drowsiness, pay attention to the warnings and do not drive. It’s not just your life you risk when you get behind the wheel of a car.
It is going to be a long winter, but it will be even longer if you are sick or injured. Aches and pains are Mother Nature’s way of telling you to take better care of your body and to seek treatment when needed.

If you wait for the weatherman to say snow is on its way, you will be left empty handed in the store. Be sure to get one for the car too.

Some people work all their lives trying to achieve the perfect lawn. They eradicate dandelions, they tear out the entire lawn to get rid of crabgrass, they seed, they water, they mow. They panic if they see a dandelion go to seed in their neighbor's yard.

I say that is a lot of bull droppings. Do not sell yourself short. Set your goals as high as you want, develop a plan, take the steps to achieve that goal (one step at a time, unless an opportunity arises that allows you to skip a step or two), and ultimately you will get the goal.
